Acai berry

Acai berry | Guarana | CamuCamu | Cupuacu | Other Exotic Fruits | Cocoa

The acai berry (written açaí in Portuguese and pronounced ah-sigh-ee) comes from the Amazon regions of Brazil. It grows on a palm tree that is harvested from August to January. It is similar in shape to a grape, and its nut takes up 90% of the berry’s volume. The local people consume the berry as a pulp, with sugar and tapioca. Due to its very high nutritional content, they rely on the fruit as a staple in their diet. Acai berry has been described as a complete food for it satisfies many daily requirements and makes for a balanced diet. Those who do not live in the Amazon region do not have the opportunity to consume this fruit in its natural form. Instead, the fruit is frozen into a puree to prevent nutritional decay. The acai puree can be prepared pure or mixed with the syrup of an Amazonian nut called guarana. Adding guarana syrup sweetens and enhances the flavors of the acai leaving the mixture both nutritious and delicious. Throughout Brazil acai berry is generally is mixed with guaraná. Some describe the taste of acai as a combination of chocolate and raspberries but even that description falls short of the mark. The acai berry’s taste is even more exotic, mysterious, and intriguing.

Acai has been getting great publicity attention and has been proclaimed as a “super food". This claim is grounded in the fruit’s nutritional composition.

Here’s what it has:

  • Acai has a higher content of antioxidants than raspberries and blueberries. The active antioxidant acai berry has are called anthocyanins, the same chemical found in red wine. Anthocyanins are especially helpful in decreasing cell destruction, which combats the aging process and helps keep the body free from disease. They are believed to prevent the onset of cancer by neutralizing free radicals in the body. They also help maintain a healthy heart and cardiovascular system. This is why it is said to be healthy to drink a glass of wine a day. Acai berry possesses 15-30 times the amount of these healthy chemicals.
  • Acai contains omega fatty acids. It is very high in omega 6 & 9, with 3 to a much lesser extent. Omegas are important for cell development, provide heart protection, and are vital for nervous system regeneration. They also play a role in brain function, strengthen the immune system, and aid in cholesterol management. Omegas facilitate muscle repair and quicken recovery from injury.
  • Acai contains a supply of protein. It’s high content of amino acids are essential for muscle development. Aminos increase endurance and strength while providing sustained energy.
  • Acai is rich in fiber, phytosterols, and monounsaturated fats (the healthy fats). These help to maintain a healthy, properly functioning digestive tract and cardiovascular system.
  • The fruit is also a source of Calcium, Iron, the B vitamins, and vitamin C.
